II Brigade crossing to Antwerp. Great enthusiasm at Dunkirk Harbour on the arrival of the two Naval Brigades of the R. N. Division, 5th October 1914. French Lines; Fort in distance. This Fort was blown to pieces shortly after by the big German howitzers. These Forts were pre-war, and of course their positions were known accurately. Vieux Dieu,. Antwerp, October 1914. R. N. Men of the Royal Naval Division in a town square with their rifles stacked. Anson Battalion, Royal Naval Division in trenches, Antwerp, Belgium. Trenches at Vieux Dieu, between Forts 4 and 5, occupied by 2nd R. N. Brigade, 6th-8th October 1914. These were built shortly after the War started, and formed the second line of defence of Antwerp, but were absolutely inadequate against modern gun-fire. R. N. Division.

Surgeon Crook outside dug-out, Antwerp, October 1914 R. N. Division. Dug-outs constructed before the War, occupied by men of the Naval Brigades, near Vieux Dieu, Antwerp, 6th-8th October 1914. R. N. Division. An oil tank of the American Petroleum Company at Hoboken, set on fire by the German bombardment of Antwerp. Or another account is a magazine outside Antwerp exploded by German howitzer shells.

Officers of the Nelson Battalion, 2nd R. N. Brigade, on the transport returning from Ostend, 10th October 1914. R. N. Division. Ostend on 10th October, 1914. It was full of all sorts of people, spies, etc. Germans advanced and occupied the town two days later. Officers of the Howe Battalion on board the transport returning from Ostend, 10 October 1914.
