Charles Redmond was born in South Shields on 7th April 1891. He was working as a labourer when he enrolled in the RNVR on 8th February 1912 and allocated the service number 3/152.

At the outbreak of war Charles was drafted to the Hawke Battalion of the newly formed RND and ordered to the defence of Antwerp with the Division. Charles' Service Record states that he was killed in action on 7th October '14. However the diary of William Reid would indicate that Charles was taken prisoner from the train attacked at Moerbeke and then shot over the night of the 9th/10th during an escape attempt (Jack Clegg).
