Sub-Lieut. W. E. S. Hope, of Drake Battalion, R. N. D., Cape Helles; a picture taken immediately on return to bivouac after eight days in the trenches, when water was too scarce to be used for shaving. Ill with form of dysentery at the time. The Cypress Grove on the eastern side of Cape Helles, showing French bivouacs. Morto Bay to the left. One of the so-called "water-towers" on the Krithia Road at Cape Helles, damaged near the base by gun-fire. Various explanations have been given of these towers, which formed a prominent landmark early in the campaign, but later were destroyed. In the trenches at Cape Helles. Men of the R. N. D.
